I have the book on jihad, "The legacy of Jihad" and it is a fantastic library of sometimes never before translated texts from Muslim and non-Muslim sources regarding the basis of Jihad and how it has been practised over the centuries. Frankly this is one of the genuinely indispensible books on the matter. There is little editorialising, just primary source material on jihad, the base texts of theologians and rulers of the times, as well as of observers and victims. Jihad is always based on the life & teachings of Muhammad and the Qur'an. Always. I cannot recommend it highly enough.
