Time to admit that I need a holiday. Make the most of some sunshine and family. My wife works hard and I promised God I would look after her, she needs a break too. And after all, regarding my responsibilities in this world, it is to my family alone that I may approach being something like indispensable. To the rest of the world I am at best of some small use for some short time, but then quickly forgotten: "In the morning they are like grass which sprouts anew ... toward evening it fades and withers away" (Ps 90.5-6). It is our condition.
I do not find this a pessimistic appraisal. This is because I realise that God finds me (and you) particularly interesting. In fact -strange as it may sound to our ears - through his giving of himself for me on the cross he shows that I (and you) am indispensable to him. Isn't that an astonishing thought?
I reciprocate his love. I would rather sit with him under a tree and enjoy his company than be President of the United States. What will heaven be if not primarily that we can enjoy eternal life in the company of our Creator - the person who is Life itself. Real life - children, mountain trails, parks, music, big Italian motorcycles - is not boring. No wonder the Psalmist writes "being with you I desire nothing on earth".
Me, I can easily become boring but being with Life Itself can never be boring. Can it.
May I encourage you to also make the most of this Christmas and some time with people you love (and even - gosh - with the Living God)? Let's not assume there will be plenty more opportunities for this in life. That is not our decision.
God willing we will see each other again in a couple of weeks. Merry Christmas.
