Trump's pick for Secretary of Defence
Well, moving on from image and other superficialities.....
I present an interesting talk from 18 months ago by retired Marine four-star General James Mattis on the state of the world. As this chap is Mr Trump's choice for SecDef it is useful to consider what kind of person he is, how he sees the world and the threats to our freedom. I have skipped the introductions and also his discussion of Russia & China and staged the clip at where he begins to talk about the Middle East and Islam.
He has extensive experience there and has a lot of insight and stories of his personal encounters with many different Muslims from the region. He gives an estimation of Western-friendly States, such as Jordan, Egypt and the UAE, and their leaders. He mentions how many nations of the Middle East see themselves aligned more with Israel these days - certainly in Israel's understanding of the existential threat of Sharia Islam. There is a very useful, lengthy and informed question time at the end.
I like nearly all he has to say and how he says it. I like him personally (I always find I get on well with old soldiers - probably because they deal with things as they are, not as they hope they might be, due to the responsibility they carry for peoples' lives under them). Like a lot of senior military blokes he is well read and also has a good grasp of human nature.
If I were to quibble with him it would be in that he needs to study more closely the doctrines of Jihad and the central texts of Islam. When he repeats that no "devout" religious person of any Faith can kill women and children the way ISIS does, or that Islamic terrorists do not accurately represent Islam as they have killed many more Muslims than non-Muslims he demonstrates that he doesn't have an adequate understanding of historical, orthodox Islam which does indeed teach the permissibility and sometimes the necessity of killing such people.
Trump has some other exceptional people involved in his team though (Flynn, Gaffney and others) and I am confident that together they will be able to make real progress in engaging in the War being waged against us by Sharia compliant Muslims.
Fifty-two very useful minutes follow. Perhaps you can see from the quote below why I have a lot of time for him.
