At last we're going to get to the truth of the matter! What were the reasons for AQ attacking America? This is a great opportunity to get to the real issues. A great place to start is Raymond Ibrahim's book The al-Qaeda Reader. in which he translates AQ's Arabic language documents into English for all of us to read. The whole matter is demystified - how cool is that?
Problem is that with this essay, the lecturer stipulates that there is no "correct answer here".
Well I wish I had lecturers with such an avant-garde approach to education as this person when I was studying. What a great course - I love post-modernism! And after 3 years of such courses you get a degree you say?
Seriously though, we can see that the lecturer is trying to get the students engaged at the start of a new course, trying to get them to think outside their own limited perspective. I get that much and of course this is of some use. However, it seems that the purpose of this essay ends there. It is merely to get the students using their imaginations to try and get into the mind of AQ. Yet, to answer this properly, wouldn't it be best to rely on facts? Otherwise all they have is a chance to merely imagine what motivates AQ and that depends entirely on their own backgrounds and not at all on any research. If they study what AQ say about themselves then fantastic, otherwise this would only confirm people in their ignorance wouldn't it?
Argumentum ad ignorantiam - an argument out of ignorance - is going to help precisely no-one and achieve no advancement in knowledge. There is a right answer and many wrong answers to this question. I'd have thought the paper could have signified a teachable moment and produced something of greater value.
At least David Wood provides an outstanding answer to this question in the 6 minute video below. Go ahead and find out the facts - the answers are right here.
