We hear about violent jihad attacks overseas. We hear about the killing of apostates and death threats - overseas. What about here in quiet little New Zealand?
The following story concerns a major mosque in one of our five largest cities, the details of the story I have left vague for obvious reasons, but it is a story I received first-hand from the person involved. Decide for yourself...
I spoke recently with someone involved in chid evangelism. This person had brought a Muslim boy to faith in Christ. He told my acquaintance that when the boys reach 11 or 12 their Mosque trains them in fighting. That's a little unusual, I have never attended a church that trains its tweens to fight. I'm pretty sure my experience is also typical. Why on earth would a Mosque make a point of formally training its boys to fight as they enter their teens?
After finding out his younger sibling had converted to Christ, an older brother turned up and issued a death threat to my friend. Threatening to kill this person, the older brother also stated "Soon all the Muslims will rise up and kill the Christians!" Or words to that effect.
My friend reported this to the Police who responded that they had been concerned about the mosque in question for a while, but that this was the first formal complaint they had received and would look into it. I have some experience with this mosque - it used to be Traditionalist or what might be called "Moderate" in its doctrines until recent years when an influx of Muslims with a more Orthodox view of Islam arrived. Our government brought in Muslim immigrants who were much less inclined to integrate than previous Muslims. They managed to replace this Mosque's leadership team with more like-minded people simply using the democratic process. Less Orthodox members have had to adapt or leave the Mosque. Now it certainly sounds like the Mosque has become a centre of "Radicalism".
We all wonder "Is this the only Mosque like this in New Zealand?" One is quite enough, but is there any particular reason why would this one is the only one? We might also ask: Are the Police in various parts of the country paying attention to their local Mosques? Or are they similarly waiting for a death threat or other serious complaint before they feel able to do anything?
